The Anglo-Austrian Society actively promotes social and cultural exchange, and dialogue between the UK and Austria. Our aim is to strengthen Austro-British relations in all aspects of public and cultural life.

We are an independent registered charity formed of people from all backgrounds. The Society enjoys the support of the governments of both Austria and the United Kingdom.

Vienna Fiaker

“Fahr’ ma Euer Gnaden” – colloquially – Anyone want a lift? Is still the quaint invitation of the Viennese Fiaker for a trip through the heart of old Vienna.
The clip clop of the hoofs against the gentle rumble of a passing tram is still one of my favourite Viennese sounds. Today, those horse-drawn cabs are very popular with tourists as a leisurely way of sightseeing in the city centre.

A Stafford Music Festival Event

Just occasionally a film’s theme music becomes as memorable as the film itself; none more so than The Third Man’s evocative Harry Lime Theme, played by the legendary Austrian, Anton Karas on his iconic zither.

This event brings together two art forms, the film and its music. And what better country to draw the music from than Austria! Viennese zither virtuoso Cornelia Mayer, making her third successive appearance at Stafford’s Music Festival will give a live performance in words and music either side of a rare showing of The Third Man.

Starring Orson Wells and voted the greatest British film of all time, The Third Man is brilliantly scripted by Graham Greene, directed by Carol Reed and further enhanced by Robert Krasker’s Academy Award winning cinematography.

And just as The Third Man was a collaboration between Austrian music and British film-making, this event is a joint presentation by Stafford Film Society and the Anglo-Austrian Society
