Music

Introduction

There is music everywhere in Austria. In Vienna with the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and at the State Opera, in the provinces at the festivals in Salzburg, Bregenz ,Mörbisch and Bad Ischl. You can enjoy concerts and dinner shows where between courses you are treated to highly entertaining music and dancing in traditional costume.

In late July and August there are music festivals throughout Austria in the cities and small mountain resorts. There are huge international festivals and small local productions and numerous village festivals.

Vienna has been considered the music capital of the world for centuries. From here came the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Gluck, Haydn, Bruckner, Wolf, Mahler, Lanner, the Strauss family and other great artists.

You can visit formal concerts in the Musikverein in Vienna or the Haydnsaal in Eisenstadt. If you are really lucky, in the summer months, you may catch an open air concert at Schönbrunn Palace or in Grafenegg. On January 1st each year you have the opportunity to hear the New Year’s Day Concert – if you can’t get a ticket then visit the Town Hall and watch the huge free screens. If you can’t get to Vienna then watch and listen the concert broadcast live throughout the world.

Of course there is also ‘The Sound of Music’. The hills are still alive when you travel through Austria's countryside. Follow the footsteps of the van Trapp family and experience "The Sound of Music". We suggest taking a tour and visiting the movie locations.

Or you may just want to just relax in a Heuriger (wine tavern) on the outskirts of Vienna and listen to the music of the Zither or Accordian whilst enjoying a glass or two of the local wine.
