Festivals

It is Music and theatrical Festivals that attract thousands of visitors to Austria each year. Among the most well known are the New Year’s day Concert from Vienna and also the Sch ö nnbrunn Summer Concert booth of which are televised and broadcast throughout the world to more than 80 countries.


Here are just a few examples of other festivals.


Salzburger Festspiele - Salzburg Festival


The Salzburg Festival (www.salzburgfestival.at) was founded in 1920 and is held passion plays performed around Easter. However, the international reputation of the Salzburg F estival was earned for opera and concerts, not for the drama.

Bregenzer Festspiele - Bregenz Festival


This festival is smaller than the Salzburg one, but nonetheless offers high-quality opera in an impressive setting. The performances of the Bregenz Festival (www.bregenzerfestspiele.com) are performed on a big stage built into the Lake Constance in Vorarlberg.

Wiener Festwochen -Vienna Spring Festival


This festival in Austria′s capital takes place for five weeks during May and June. The programme includes concert, drama and opera from in variety of ages and styles.

Schubertiade: Schubert Festival


This festival take place in Schwarzenberg, Vorarlberg and specializes in the performances of Schubert.

Bad Ischl and Baden Operetta Festivals


Operetta Festivals take place in the summer months at both of these spa towns and are frequented by many visitors.

Schloss Grafenegg


Since 2008 the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria take up residence in in July and August as part of the International Music Summer under the direction of Rudolf Buchbinder. This festival has established an outstanding reputation in a very short time.

Donauinselfest Vienna


The Donauinselfest (www.donauinselfest.at) is a festival of modern music that has been organised in its current form in Vienna since 1984. For three days in early summer, the series of free open air concerts by a variety of international, contemporary bands transforms the Donauinsel ("Danube Island") into the largest open air concert in Europe.

Mörbischer Seefestspiele


Mörbisch has become famous for its Operetta festival Seefestspiele that are performed on a floating stage on Lake Neusiedl. The festival runs from the middle of July to the end of August.

Festspiele Reichenau


This is a top-ranking theatre festival among the Austrian summer cultural events. Its program is based on an outstanding cultural tradition. Only 70 miles south of Vienna, situated in a scenic mountainous setting, Reichenau has been a traditional summer resort for the Viennese high society since the late 19th century.

Every year thousands of theatre-loving visitors come to Reichenau and Semmering to see excellent presentations of the plays, once written by famous poets in this area.
