Folk music
Volksmusik commonly refers to traditional music from the Alpine regions of Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and the province of Bolzano-Bozen in Italy.
Typical instruments range from zithers to alpenhorns and acoustic guitars, harps, and accordions. Harmonized singing is frequent, but other pieces may require yodelling.
Many instrumental arrangements include Ländler (a country dance from which the waltz derives) and pieces for brass bands and soloists. This music is usually very localized invoking regional lifestyles and traditions.
Volksmusik is very popular continues to be performed by many local groups and orchestras throughout the European Alps must not be confused with volkstümliche Musik, which is largely to be found in the broadcasting media.
